For me this post is an experience rather than guide to become a self publisher outside U.S for Apple’s iBookStore. If you live in outside United States and wanted to publish or self publish eBooks and to sell it on iBookStore, its not an easy job. When it comes to Signing up for a paid account for iBookStore to sell your content, its a long process. It took me about 3 months to actually open a paid account for publishing my eBooks on Apple iBookStore. So I thought to share my experience.
To Begin with, Visit the Apple’s own website and read the FAQs.
To sign up to offer your books on the iBookstore, you need to complete the application.
There are 4 steps to actually deliver your content. I will only focus on Step 1.
Step 1. Sign Up
Complete your application for either a Paid or Free Books Account.
Step 2. Confirm Account
Click through your account approval email to complete your application and confirm your email address.
Step 3. Download iTunes Producer
Download our delivery application, iTunes Producer (requires OS X v10.6 or later).
Step 4. Deliver
Using iTunes Producer, provide your book’s basic information and click Deliver.
For Step 1. You can choose between a Paid Books Account and a Free Books Account. If you are wondering what is the difference between a Paid and Free Books Account then read the below
A Paid Books Account allows you to sell books and offer books for free on the iBookstore. You will need to provide banking and tax information so you can receive payment.
A Free Books Account allows you to offer books for free on the iBookstore. If you think you may later have books you would like to sell, you should create a Paid Books Account now, as existing Free Books Accounts can’t be converted to Paid Book Accounts.
Since, I wanted to open a Paid Books Account, So I clicked the Get Started Button, and There was a screen to choose between whether you want to create an Free or Paid.
For Paid Books Account. Below are the requirements.
- Digital rights to the books you would like to sell
- An Apple ID for use on the iTunes Store with a valid credit card on file
- A valid email account
- A Mac computer with OS X v10.6 or later
- A valid U.S. Tax ID
- A valid bank account
I had everything to start with but a Valid U.S Tax ID. And since I was a foreign individual, so my concern was why I need a US Tax ID and how will I get one?
There is very good information about it on IRS website (http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/General-ITIN-Information). Please read each and every point very carefully.
After reading this information I figured out that IRS issues ITINs to foreign nationals and others who have federal tax reporting or filing requirements and do not qualify for SSNs. A non-resident alien individual not eligible for a SSN who is required to file a U.S. tax return only to claim a refund of tax under the provisions of a U.S. tax treaty needs an ITIN.
Other examples of individuals who need ITINs include:
- A nonresident alien required to file a U.S. tax return
- A U.S. resident alien (based on days present in the United States) filing a U.S. tax return
- A dependent or spouse of a U.S. citizen/resident alien
- A dependent or spouse of a nonresident alien visa holder
There is a question on the same page which have almost sufficient information about applying for ITIN (in my case i.e applying as a foreign national)
How do I apply for an ITIN?
Use the latest revision of Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number to apply.
I am attaching my completed form here for your reference.
Attach a valid federal income tax return, unless you qualify for an exception, and include your original proof of identity or copies certified by issuing agency and foreign status documents.
Since I applied for ITIN, I haven’t attached a valid federal income tax return, and I qualified for an exception (Exception 1(d)-royalties) I mentioned in the Form itself.
You are also required to include supplemental documents to substantiate your qualification for the exception, as soon as possible after you determine that you are covered by that exception.
For this I needed the letter from an organisation from which you will get royalties. Since I can use this ITIN no for selling it on Apple iBookStore or Amazon so I searched the internet and found out that Amazon provides a letter to fulfil this requirement. Take a printout of completed letter. I have attached it with post for your reference.
For proof of Identity I notarised my passport from US Embassy in Delhi and paid USD 50 for it.
Send your completed Form W-7 and proof of identity and foreign status documents to:
Internal Revenue Service
Austin Service Center
P.O. Box 149342
Austin, TX 78714-9342
Now, You have successfully applied for the ITIN, How and when can I expect to receive my ITIN? IRS website says
If you qualify for an ITIN and your application is complete, you will receive a letter from the IRS assigning your tax identification number usually within six weeks. If you have not received your ITIN or other correspondence six weeks after applying, call the IRS toll-free number at 1-800-829-1040 to request the status of your application if you are in the United States. If you are outside the United States, call 267-941-1000 (not a toll-free number).
I still remember I sent the completed application in last week of September 2012, but I never hear back even after 9 weeks, So I called +18008291040 using Skype as it was a free call from India which save me some bucks because the call was very long. I had to press a couple of numbers on IVRS. It took the person on call too long to get my details because she was having difficulties to spell my name and some other details for she was asking, then finally she said that I was assigned an ITIN from IRS. A happy news after a long time.
So this was the process just to get the ITIN from IRS. And then it took me no time to complete the rest of the process to activate the Paid Books Account.
I published one eBook which again took so long to publish. I will cover that in a separate post very soon.
Till then, Stay happy, Stay Blessed.
